After growing up in Erie, Pennsylvania, and graduating from a small, "quietly prestigious," Quaker college, I worked as a sales representative for Procter & Gamble before obtaining a Master’s degree in politics. I then attended law school where I was selected to be a Teaching Assistant in my second year and the Head Teaching Assistant in my third year. After graduation, I joined Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom’s litigation department in Boston. I have been a founding partner of a boutique trial firm and, for thirteen years, was a shareholder in the Boston office of Adler Pollock & Sheehan, P.C. and, subsequently, was a Director in the Boston firm of Rackemann Sawyer & Brewster, P.C.. Along the way, I have tried to build a reputation for being honest and trustworthy and as one worthy of being considered among the upper echelon of business litigators in Boston.
Community service is a value I believe in. I have served multiple terms on my town's Zoning Board of Appeals and I have handled a variety of pro bono matters. I also was appointed as Chairman of a commission created by the Massachusetts legislature in 2012 to investigate the public employee retirement system's group classification system. After a year of lively meetings, the Commission produced a report to the legislature, which I drafted. In September 2013, I was appointed by Governor Deval Patrick as one of the seven Commissioners to the Massachusetts Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission (also known as “PERAC”), which provides oversight, monitoring and regulation of the 105 public pension systems in the Commonwealth. In October 2014, my fellow Commissioners elected me to be Chairman of the Commission. Finally, I am active as the Chair of the Community Outreach Committee and as a member of the Executive Committee of the Tufts Medical Center's Board of Governors.
For fun, I compete for the Weymouth Waves and the New England Masters swim teams at regional and national competitions. I have completed the Boston Marathon (when one could do so as a bandit, albeit in 3:10) as well as sprint and Olympic distance triathlons. My all time favorite activity is to ski with my family, especially at Sugarloaf, Maine. I also run regularly, do Bikram hot yoga, take spin classes, water ski, and golf. I read for pleasure almost every day, I like to cook, and I like to play with our golden retriever almost as much as she does.
